Our moment to Be still…to Be fed by the Word of God…to Be grateful.
Scripture reference: Proverbs 14:18 (NIV)
TRANSCRIPT:
Today I am thinking about my life’s divine lessons. Specifically, I’m thinking about people who cross our paths, and come into our lives to teach us these divine lessons. In many instances, they model for us what we should do. Although, there are those instances where they show us what not to do. These are in a sense divine lessons that we should heed. It becomes easier to identify and to apply these lessons when we remain self-aware and, avoid becoming complacent.
These thoughts remind me about the relationship between Eli and Samuel. As we know, Eli takes in Samuel to care for him, and to ultimately groom him to become the first prophet of Israel. As we recently addressed, Eli made some parenting missteps of his own, because he failed to discipline his sons early on. What’s interesting is that instead of Samuel learning from Eli’s missteps, he ends up repeating them. Samuel also had sons who displayed dishonorable behavior.
Sometimes we avoid making the exact mistake, but it’s still a mistake in the same vein. Case and point: Even though the acts of Eli’s sons differed from the acts of Samuel’s sons, in the final analysis their behavior was still dishonorable. I think we are more inclined to miss these divine lessons when we move away from God’s Word, and fall into a place of complacency and normalcy.
The words that I have come to respect are “The simple inherit foolishness but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.” Proverbs 14:18 (NIV)
