This is our B moment. Our moment to be still…to be fed by the Word of God…to be grateful.
Scripture reference: Ezra 8:23 (NIV)
This morning I am thinking about the power of fasting. Until recently, this has never been a practice of mine. It’s always been something that I have watched others do.
On occasion, I may have fasted with a group of ladies during Lent. Although, in hindsight, my actions may have been more about me furthering my intimacy with the group rather than my relationship with God.
Recently, I’ve begun to fast, and here are (3) key takeaways from my experience:
First, fasting can help me to surrender my situation. All throughout the day, I find myself turning matters over to God.
Second, fasting becomes a pre-requisite to me taking any action. In general, I might know that I need to take an action, but I may be unclear as to the specifics. Fasting gives me greater clarity. Or, I may know exactly the action I need to take, but I may be afraid to take it. Fasting also calms and fortifies me.
Finally, I have learned to not just limit my forbearance to food and drink. I will fast from television and radio, or whatever is necessary to be in a deeper communion with God.
The Words that I use to inspire me are, “So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.” Ezra 8:23 (NIV)
Share this reflection, because others desire to be inspired.
So today, maybe fasting is the next step for you.
You are right Sue, fasting does bring you closer to God. I have fasted primarily during Lent and it is oh so powerful. I honestly didn’t think about doing it on a regular basis as tool to gain clarity, insight and instruction before undertaking an endeavor. It is also another means of sacrifice.
Thanks
Hi Jo – yes, all of my previous experiences with fasting has been during the Lent Season, but I never thought about it beyond that. It allows me to surrender everything to Him, and I have received great clarity on things. God Bless!
Wonderful message and exactly what I needed to hear. I have been praying to God about what can I do in the face of violence in the world and in our country. I have been continually upset over police brutality on unarmed citizens in our country and feeling helpless to do anything about it. A healer told me to “send love” but I have continued to read the stories and watch the videos with anger rather than compassion. While I can’t fast from food due to a medical condition, I can take a news and FB fast. Rather than fill the ‘lulls’ with current events, I can meditate, read scripture, pray, and … send love. Will give this a go for the next week. I do feel like this is the answer to my petitions to God for more peace and forgiveness in my life!! Thank you again for this inspired message 🙂
