When our lives begin to change and our future seems uncertain, it is understandable that we worry about whether we are on the path God set for us or if we have strayed. However, instead of simply fretting about whether we are moving toward the destination God planned for us, we can assess our journey and our path, then adjust accordingly. In other words, by keeping God and His ultimate plan in mind, we can ensure we make the choices that will keep us on our heavenly path.
Here are 3 ways to ensure you are moving down your heavenly path:
- Understand that your actions—and your reactions—determine your destination. Many times, you will be in the driver’s seat, so to speak, when it comes to the major decisions of your life. However, on occasion, life will seem to simply happen to you. In both instances, it is important to recall that the way you behave dictates where you end up. For example, when Joseph’s brothers sold Joseph into slavery as well as when he ended up in jail, Joseph didn’t despair. He didn’t even hold a grudge against his brothers. Instead, he found it in his heart to forgive them. In this way, he moved closer toward his destiny (and his eventual palace) by acting in an admirable way. His actions and his reaction to the unforeseen circumstance led him to his heavenly destination. To ensure you stay on your heavenly path, recall the words: “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those that enter by it are many.” Matthew 7:13 (ESV)
- Invest your little and trust that you will obtain more. In life, you may sometimes have to begin at an entry level, meaning you don’t have much in the way of compensation or responsibilities. While this may be a little disheartening, it is also a fabulous way to prove yourself. In the Scriptures, Jesus tells of a man who gave one of his servants five bags of gold to invest for him while the man was away. The servant took the amount he was given (not a terribly significant amount) and invested it, turning it into ten bags of gold by the time his employer had returned. As a reward, the man decided to give the servant more responsibilities. From this story, it is clear that even if you are in an entry-level position, you are able to turn what little you have into much more—especially if you keep your eye on your heavenly destiny. To remember this lesson, hold these words in your heart: “To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.” Matthew 25:29 (NLT)
- Remember your purpose when you make tough decisions. Making difficult choices is never a pleasant or simple task as taking responsibility for an outcome is frightening. However, rather than shying away from the choices in front of you, try to recall the story of King Balak and the prophet Balaam. Balak tried his very best to induce Balaam to curse the Israelites, offering him riches beyond his wildest dreams. Yet Balaam did not evade the decision but instead gave Balaak a resounding NO, saying that he would never act against the will of the Lord. In other words, Balaam strode toward his destiny by confidently choosing God over everything else. Bring to mind your heavenly purpose the next time you are faced with a tough choice by remembering the words: “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18 (NIV)
Today, turn your blues to blessings by ensuring you are on your heavenly path.
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)
