Webster defines “blindsided” as “to surprise unpleasantly.” Imagine this: you’re standing tall, your inner light beaming because you believe the winds of change are finally blowing your way. You’re filled with joy about what’s on the horizon in this new and long-awaited season. But suddenly, you’re blindsided, with no time to brace yourself for the blow. It feels like a gut punch that knocks you to your knees.
Unfortunately, when some of us pick ourselves back up, we never assume the same posture again. We go from standing tall to standing in a guarded position. A typical response is – “Never again.” Fool me once; shame on you. Fool me twice; shame on me. We’ve all been there.
Here are (3) ways to recover and face tomorrow with renewed hope:
1) Trust even more in the unseen. Here’s the irony — the only way out of a situation where you’ve been blindsided – a place where you couldn’t see – is to trust even more in the unseen. Trust that God is still at work and His greater plan is unfolding even at this very moment. Paul teaches us “to fix our eyes on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 Cor. 4:18)
2) Guard your heart. Prioritize guarding your heart over guarding your feelings, pride, or anything else. It is the center of your inner life. In situations where we experience a range of emotions like betrayal, fear, bitterness, and sadness, it’s necessary to process the pain rather than let it stain your heart. Proverbs (4:23) teaches, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
3) Keep pressing. Of all the ages you could have been born, you were born for this age, for this season, for a reason. Never allow being blindsided to cause you to give up hope. Galatians 6:9 reminds us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Persevere in your faith and good deeds, and God will deliver blessings beyond your expectations.
Even when you’re blindsided, God is always with you, guiding you through the storm. Keep trusting, guarding your heart, and pressing forward, and you’ll find renewed hope and strength in His promises.
As you think about that, remember these words, “for we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7 (ESV)
