This is our B moment. Our moment to be still…to be fed by the Word of God…to be grateful.
Scripture reference: Mark 7:15 (NLT)
Today, I am truly in celebration mode.
When I feel this way, I’m in the mood to get out and about, to visit family and friends. As an added bonus, the weather is great so I’m excited about that as well.
With all this celebration, there will be a lot of backyard grilling going on. When that happens, I can, at times, become a little fixated on the great food I’m about to partake in: the delicious burgers, scrumptious desserts, and even a delightful glass of wine or two.
Yet as soon as these thoughts and images enter my mind, I also think about overdoing it. I worry about defiling my body by eating unhealthy things.
Then I recall what Jesus taught the Pharisees in Mark 7. When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to dinner, they noticed that he did not partake in the hand washing ceremony that was customary at the time. The Pharisees in attendance were absolutely appalled.
However, Jesus explained to them that we are not defiled by what we eat, but by rather what we say and do.
After reading this, I felt liberated to some extent because it created such clarity about what really matters to God. Therefore, the next time we become confused about what really defiles us, let us cling to these words: “It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart.” Mark 7:15 (NLT)
Please share this reflection as others desire to be inspired.
So today, keep a clean heart and put away the calorie counter.
