This is our B moment. Our moment to be still…to be fed by the Word of God…to be grateful.
Scripture reference: Philippians 3:13-14 (ESV)
Today, I am thinking about how discomfort can equal growth. I was reminded of this fact because I recently had the pleasure of attending a book signing by Steve Pemberton, the author of A Chance in the World.
If you haven’t heard Steve’s story, it is an amazing story of triumph. He had an incredibly difficult childhood. His mother was an alcoholic, and he was raised in an abusive foster home.
After hearing this heartbreaking tale, someone in the audience asked Steve if there was anything about his life that he would change, given the chance. Sitting there, it was easy to imagine that Steve would gravitate toward changing something in his childhood.
However, he went on to say that his only regret in life was staying too long in a place where he had stopped learning and stopped growing.
I thought his statement was extremely profound because we can sometimes become nestled in the comforts of everyday life, equating what feels good and normal to living a good life. Yet remember, we want to live purposefully, too. This means we’ll sometimes have to stretch and challenge ourselves and endure some discomfort until we reach that next level.
Therefore, let’s find inspiration in the author’s words and remind ourselves not to settle for mediocrity, but to strive and stretch toward God’s purpose. Although it might not be comfortable in the beginning, it will pay off in the end.
These are the words that I want us to cling to: “Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14 (ESV)
Please share this reflection as others desire to be inspired.
So today, don’t dwell in your comfort zone for too long.
