Scripture reference: Ephesians 6:11 (ESV)

I don’t know about you, but last week’s election results have left me feeling deeply betrayed. It’s hard to fathom that my fellow Americans could support a twice-impeached, 34-count convicted felon and insurrectionist. The last two weeks of his campaign were filled with dark rhetoric and racial slurs, yet it seems many still voted for him. This has all shaken my faith in our collective values.
Here’s a question I’ve been asking myself and will now ask you – “How do you use your energy when you believe someone has wronged you?” When I reflect on the Scriptures, I am reminded of how Joseph was betrayed by his brothers. Recall that Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers due to their jealousy of him. Next, he was thrown into prison after being falsely accused.
Here’s an important takeaway from Joseph’s story—it is never stated or even intimated that Joseph contemplated retaliation. When his brothers finally confronted him years later, he only wept for them and told them that God turned into good what they intended for evil.
Here’s the key: We seldom retaliate against anyone. Instead, we can become consumed by the idea of another reaping what they’ve sown and allow it to stain our hearts and usurp our energy. Alternatively, we can find peace and strength, day by day, by trusting in God’s greater plan.
As you remind yourself that God is still on the throne, remember these words: “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11 (ESV)
