Today I want you to know that God is always up to something greater.
Recently we talked about navigating through challenging times. We said that some circumstances require us to seek God for GPS-like directions, meaning direction at every step.
What we begin to see more and more is that despite how we see our day-to-day lives, God is always up to something greater. This was surely the case with Stephen from the book of Acts.
Stephen stood before several Jewish leaders and gave a pretty lengthy address about the presence and glory of God dating all the way back to the days of Abraham and Moses. But as he began to speak more truth to power to these leaders, they chose to stone him to death.
Word spread of Stephen’s murder and many Christian believers fled Jerusalem, fearing for their own lives. Here’s the key takeaway. Initially, these Christian believers were frightened and could see no good in Stephen’s death.
However, as these believers relocated around the world, they also began to spread the gospel. In other words, the gospel was able to reach corners of the globe that it likely would not have if this tragic sequence of events had not occurred.
Through Stephen’s story, we see that God always has something greater at work. The key is to keep the faith, even when we can’t see His greater plan. As you think about that, remember these words: “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” Proverbs 19:21 (ESV)
