This is our B moment. Our moment to be still…to be fed by the Word of God…to be grateful.

This month, love is in the air, and I have been thinking a lot about self love.
I will be the first to acknowledge that I’ve come a long way in this regard. Sometimes the struggle to fully love oneself is due to the shame that we still carry around about certain aspects of our past—even if that past was a very long time ago.
What I have learned is that emotions like shame and guilt can directly impact your ability to fully love yourself and to be a loving example for others. In other words, shame from the past is a stain on your heart today.
Several years ago, I started to see things differently. I began to see that all of my past—not just the beautiful parts—had a purpose. If we can begin to see things from this perspective, we may be on our way to having a stronger sense of self love.
When I turn to the Scriptures, I think about Rahab’s story. We first hear about Rahab as a prostitute, but her story doesn’t end there. Years later, she became Boaz’s mother. Boaz then became King David’s great-grandfather, ensuring that Rahab was a part of Jesus’ family line.
One important lesson that Rahab’s life teaches us is that the love Christ has for us transcends our past behaviors. Surely if he can love us in this way, he wants us to be loving and forgiving of ourselves in this way too.
As you think about that, hold onto these words: “…but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (ESV)
