This is our B moment. Our moment to be still…to be fed by the Word of God…to be grateful.
Scripture reference: Philippians 2:13 (ESV)
Today I am thinking about how God’s definition of impact may be different from ours.
I sit on the local school counsel of my son’s high school. My role is to keep the parent community informed and connected. Many times I will host parent panels or bring in guest speakers to address the parents. These events have become quite popular and many times there is standing room only. Attendance is, of course, how I used to measure the impact of the program.
Last week I held a session. Attendance was good but it wasn’t standing room only. The thought popped into my head as I looked around, “I must have missed the mark.” But I couldn’t figure out how, as the topic was teen depression and our guest speaker was from John Hopkins. However, I must have missed something, but I would later learn that it wasn’t in the way that I thought.
After the event I stopped by the school office, and there was a parent pouring her heart out about the event. Before the event, she had been concerned about her son for a long time. The speaker and information she had gathered by attending had answered many of her questions. She had even been able to find resources to support her in helping her child.
As I walked back to my car I thought to myself, “If this session has only been held for that one parent, it was an impactful session.”
I had been measuring impact by the numbers, but God showed me that His metric system is different.
The Words I use to teach me are, “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13 (ESV)
So today, go about doing a good work for God and leave measuring the results to Him.
