Scripture reference: Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)

Playing the long game means having the discipline to resist your way and to hold out for God’s will to unfold. It is your conscious choice to trust God in the short term.
I know that sounds easier said than done, but as Psalm 65:11 (NKJV) teaches, when the faithful can practice this their “…paths drip with abundance.”
This was the very decision David had to make. Recall that David was on the run from King Saul’s relentless jealousy for years. Imagine the exhaustion, the constant danger, and the temptation to retaliate. One day, the tables turned when Saul entered the cave where David and his men hid. David could have easily ended Saul’s life, but he played the long game instead.
He chose not to take the outcome out of God’s hands and into his own.
In the end, David was rewarded by being crowned king and reigning for forty years. His story shows that God’s timing is perfect, and His rewards for our patience and faith are immeasurable.
As you think about that, remember these words: “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)
