This is such a perfect metaphor for how we approach God in our prayers … we often come to him as beggars, asking for different types of alms “God, give me this, give me that” … But when God doesn’t give us the alms for which we are praying, maybe He’s really giving to us in another way, and that is to stand us up on our own two feet and walk toward our spiritual healing. We are not necessarily healed or brought closer to God by getting the things for which we are asking. This is such a wonderful story and great reminder to stop being the beggar praying “for” this or that but rather, to live in a continuous state of prayer, which might mean living in a state of gratitude … for all of it … even those things I might judge today as “bad” without knowing from my limited perspective how today’s ‘bad’ thing is actually a step on my path to healing and wholeness.
