This is our B moment. Our moment to be still…to be fed by the Word of God…to be grateful.
Scripture reference: John 15:12 (ESV)
Today I am thinking about how we please God when we honor others even under the most challenging circumstances.
Recently I was reading in the Old Testament about a time when Abraham and his nephew Lot had settled together in the same region. They were both wealthy men with a great number of sheep and cattle. Their herds flourished. The number of animals to be pastured and watered began to put stress on the available resources. As the scarcity grew, the herdsmen of Lot and Abraham began to fight each other for resources.
Abraham went to Lot and said, “This arguing between our men has got to stop. After all, we are close relatives.” Then he went a step further. He followed up his acknowledgement of the problem by honoring Lot. He offered Lot any part of the land he wished for, and promised to move his own people and herds aside to allow Lot to live in that area in peace.
Lot, however, responded with selfishness. After surveying the land, Lot chose the most fertile land near the Jordan river valley and left the less fertile land to Abraham.
Both men’s choices are instructive. Abraham chose to please God by honoring his fellow man. Lot chose to honor himself. It’s when one’s values aren’t rooted in God that our ego can get in the way of us honoring one another.
These are the Words that I will use when I am inclined to act from my ego, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12 (ESV)
Please share this reflection with others as they also desire to be inspired.
So today, choose to honor the one who may bring you the most grief.
