This is our B moment. Our moment to be still…to be fed by the Word of God…to be grateful.

Today I am thinking about when we become too wrapped up in our own identity.
I was recently reading about the parable of the rich, young ruler. When this young man approached Christ, he asked, “Teacher, what must I do to have eternal life?” Jesus, knowing how much the young man valued following the law, began talking with him about the Ten Commandments.
Yet as Jesus was naming the commandments one by one, the young man said, “All of these, I have kept. So what do I still lack?” Jesus told him that he needed to sell his possessions and give the money to the poor since he would have treasure in heaven. Then Jesus told the young man to come and follow him.
The man sorrowfully left Jesus because he knew that he could not part with his money. It was more than just his wealth; it had become his identity. He derived a sense of power from it, and it was the way he defined his life. It was his treasure. So although Jesus invited him to trade his god of wealth for the treasure stored with God in heaven, he couldn’t do it.
Sometimes, we can unconsciously become wrapped up in things like identity and status and possessions. They may even begin to encroach upon our relationship and our sacred space with God. When that happens to me, I cling to these words: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10 (ESV)
Please share this reflection as others desire to be inspired.
So today, keep a clean heart.
