This is our B moment. Our moment to be still…to be fed by the Word of God…to be grateful.

Today my heart is heavy as I am focusing on what a modern-day shepherd looks like.
Let me set the scene for you: a husband, wife, and their newborn son walk into their local Walmart to buy school supplies and decorations for their six-year-old daughter’s birthday party, which is set for this coming weekend. While the family is innocently shopping, a gunman opens fire on them and others for the sole purpose of responding to the “Hispanic invasion of Texas.”
When he fired in the direction of this family, the mother instinctively shielded her newborn and the father moved to shield his wife and child. Both parents were fatally shot. The newborn survived, but his six-year-old sister can’t seem to comprehend that her parents won’t be coming home and that her birthday party won’t be this weekend.
By now you’ve heard that our country experienced a double mass shooting this past weekend. These parents were more than parents; they were modern-day shepherds. In ancient times, the sheep would stay in a sheepfold. When all the sheep were inside, the shepherd would physically lay across the opening, using his body to form a gate since the sheepfold had no door.
This is exactly what happened in that Walmart. There was no door in the open shopping space, so these brave souls lay their bodies across their loved ones to protect them—in the same way Christ lay down his life for us. It’s unfortunate the gunman didn’t know this kind of love. Let us remember these words: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” John 10:11 (ESV)
