This Lent season, let’s go a bit deeper and reflect on the idea that we don’t always see the immediate results we’re in search of, but our faith teaches us that God is working within us in ways that we cannot yet see.
In the Gospel of Luke, we encounter Zechariah, a priest visited by an angel of the Lord who tells him that he and his wife, Elizabeth, will be blessed with a son, and he is to be named John. Overwhelmed with fear and doubt, Zechariah struggles to believe this incredible news. As a result, God silences him until the birth of his son.
When Elizabeth delivers their son, Zechariah faithfully names him John, as the angel instructed. At first glance, his voice appears restored simply because he finally aligns with God’s will. But let’s delve deeper.
What truly happened during Zechariah’s months of silence? How did he transform from disbelief to belief? We can imagine Zechariah being like clay in the potter’s hand during this period, as described in Jeremiah 18:4-6. Just as a potter reshapes clay that has become spoiled, God worked within Zechariah, reshaping his thoughts and renewing his mind.
As we honor the Lent season, let us hold onto the hope that we, too, are in God’s hands. Even in moments of silence and seeing no results, God is molding us, preparing us for more than we can imagine or expect. Through faith and patience, we can trust that His plan is unfolding perfectly, just as it did for Zechariah.
As you reflect on that, remember these words: “…God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” Philippians 1:6
