Let’s go a little deeper. In the Gospel of Luke, we encounter Zechariah, a priest visited by an angel of the Lord who tells him that he and his wife, Elizabeth, will be blessed with a son, and he is to be named John. Overwhelmed with fear and doubt, Zechariah struggles to believe this incredible news. And as a result, God silences him until the birth of his son.
When Elizabeth delivers their son, Zechariah faithfully names him John, as the angel instructed. At first glance, Zechariah’s voice appears restored simply because he finally aligns with God’s will. But let’s delve deeper.
What truly happened during Zechariah’s months of silence? How did he transform from disbelief to belief? During this period, we can imagine Zechariah being like clay in the potter’s hand, as described in Jeremiah 18:4-6. Just as a potter reshapes clay that has become spoiled, God was working within Zechariah, reshaping his thoughts and renewing his mind.
As we celebrate Advent, let us hold onto the hope that we, too, are in God’s hands. Even in moments of silence and uncertainty, God is shaping us, preparing us for more than we can imagine or expect. Through faith and patience, we can trust that His plan is unfolding perfectly, just as it did for Zechariah.
As you reflect on that, remember these words: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2
