Today I am reminding you about the wonders of unexpected encounters.
Recently I read an article in the New York Times where author Emily M. D. Scott was searching for the perfect metaphor for the loss of community we’re experiencing due to the pandemic. She likens it to being on the road. She describes the pandemic as something that has “plunged our world into global grief and longing.”
Scott goes on to describe the road as a place of isolation as well as one of encounters. It can carry us from an old life to a new one. She reminds us about how Jesus sent his disciples out on the road to heal. Sometimes they were sent in pairs. Other times, they were sent alone.
These solitary travelers journeyed in situations of great uncertainty, much like our own. Their destinations may have been clear, but their futures were less so. Yet somewhere along the way, they always encountered something unexpected—the astonishing presence of the sacred.
When I think about an unexpected, sacred encounter and I turn to the Scriptures, I think about the two disciples who were traveling on the road to Emmaus. Jesus was walking among them, and they had no idea. Yet even in all of their confusion, they encountered the sacred, and it was unexpected and wonderful.
Today, even in all of the uncertainty you might be experiencing, expect that God is leading you from the old to encounter the new. As you reflect on that, remember these words: “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” Jeremiah 33:3 (ESV)
