Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” At first glance, you might want to see and cling to a promise of wish fulfillment. This was surely my case. Of course, I delighted myself in the Lord. Now, let’s get to the part about God blessing me with the desires of my heart. Honestly, back then, this is genuinely how I felt. The randomness of my desires would show how my heart was not in alignment with God’s.
Oh, but what a difference spending time with the Lord and growing in a more intimate relationship with Him can make. As we journey in our faith, we uncover this verse’s more profound meaning.
Let’s dissect this verse in three key areas:
- “Delight yourself in the Lord” – the Hebrew term for “delight” is “chephets,” which means a bending towards something. Delighting yourself in the Lord involves spending time in His presence, meditating on His Word, and seeking to know Him more intimately. As you do this, you are bending your heart toward His. And Jesus yearns for you to know His heart.
- “He will give you”—As your intimacy with Christ deepens, He will begin reshaping your heart, and you will witness your heart about certain things start to change. As He reshapes your heart, so will He also give you the desires of your heart, a heart that is now more in alignment with His.
- “The desires of your heart” – Early in our walk, we may have held more self-centered or materialistic desires, but as we mature, we realize that true joy comes from desiring God’s desires. When your heart aligns with God’s will, He delights in granting your desires because they reflect His own. This alignment brings a true sense of peace and fulfillment that surpasses any earthly pleasure.
So, as you delight yourself in the Lord, watch with awe as your heart’s desires transform into beautiful reflections of His love and purpose for your life. This is the promise of Psalm 37:4 unfolding in your life.
As you reflect on that, remember these words – “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” John 15:5
